Altris and Polarium join forces to explore sodium-ion battery technology for energy storage solutions
The Swedish sodium-ion battery developer Altris is proud to announce a partnership with Polarium, a leading energy storage developer. The two companies will collaborate to develop and demonstrate an energy storage solution based on sodium-ion batteries which are completely free from conflict minerals and toxic elements.
In November, Altris presented a sodium-ion battery cell with a best-in-class energy density of 160Wh/kg, making it commercially viable for applications such as sustainable energy storage solutions. The company’s sodium-ion chemistry is made from abundant raw minerals and is free from toxic elements, such as nickel and cobalt. This while offering an outstanding performance in terms of longer life, more flexible working temperatures and safety.
Bringing together Altris’ state-of-the-art sodium-ion battery technology and Polarium’s extensive experience in energy storage solutions, this partnership is set to revolutionize the energy storage landscape. The primary objective is to develop a sodium-ion battery cell tailored to meet the specific requirements of the residential, commercial and industrial energy storage market.
“Altris wants to bring the world better, safer and truly sustainable batteries, free from conflict minerals and toxic elements. We are excited to team up with Polarium to explore the possibilities of using our state-of-the-art sodium-ion technology in energy storage solutions in homes, commercial buildings and industries all over the world”, says Björn Mårlid, CEO of Altris.
“At Polarium, we always strive to work with the smartest, safest and most sustainable option for our cell-agnostic batteries. This flexibility allows us to quickly adapt to new technologies. We’re hopeful about the progress in this partnership and excited about the possibility of adding sodium-ion to Polarium’s product portfolio for a long-term collaboration”, says Stefan Jansson, founder and CEO of Polarium.
Polarium’s current energy storage solutions are based on lithium-ion, but one of the company’s competitive advantages lies in the agnostic nature to different battery cell chemistries. If development goals are met, Polarium aspires to introduce Altris’ sodium-ion technology to its product portfolio and develop a customized sodium-ion battery cell tailored to the customers’ needs.
Altris wins the EIT Innovation Team Awards
The Swedish sodium-ion battery developer Altris is one of the winners in the EIT Awards, the European Institute of Innovation and Technology’s competition to recognize the most promising entrepreneurs and innovators addressing global challenges connected to climate, energy, raw materials and more.
Altris receives financial support from Swedish Energy Agency
The Swedish sodium-ion battery developer Altris receives support from the Swedish Energy Agency within the programs Industrial Leap and NextGenerationEU. A total of SEK 77 million has been granted for the establishment of a pilot plant to produce sustainable and safe sodium-ion battery cells.
