Altris and Oscilion Launch Nordic Sodium-Ion Battery Module for Military Applications

The Swedish sodium-ion battery developer Altris has entered into a strategic collaboration with Oscilion, a subsidiary of Scandinavian Astor Group AB, with the aim of offering the defense sector a new generation of robust, climate-adapted, and sustainable energy storage solutions. Together, the two companies are now launching a new sodium-ion-based battery module that is developed and manufactured in the Nordic region, which has already resulted in initial customer orders.

Altris and Oscilion partnership

Together, Altris and Oscilion have developed a new sodium-ion battery module entirely free from critical raw materials such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel. Designed to meet demanding military requirements, the module is optimized for Nordic conditions and can be stored in a discharged state for extended periods without degradation. Production takes place at Altris’ facility in Uppsala, ensuring a fully Nordic value chain and reinforcing regional supply resilience.

“We see a clear need for reliable battery solutions adapted to Nordic conditions within total defense. Through its collaboration with Altris, Oscilion can now offer military batteries that, in addition to performing very well in cold conditions, also combine secure energy storage with technical and industrial independence. Being able to manufacture these in Sweden, and moreover with a European supply chain, is an important strategic reinforcement for both our customers and Europe's overall supply capacity”, says Mattias Hjorth, CEO of Scandinavian Astor Group.

Unlike most of today's battery systems, which are manufactured in China and depend on critical raw materials with limited availability, this collaboration is based on an entirely Nordic value chain – from raw materials to production. This eliminates geopolitical risks, strengthens European security of supply, and enables a higher degree of self-sufficiency for total defense.

“Altris is excited to partner with Oscilion and bring our sodium-ion technology to concrete military applications, thereby contributing to a more resilient and environmentally responsible defense. This module shows that we don't have to compromise on safety or performance to achieve sustainability and independence”, says Christer Bergquist, CEO of Altris.

Altris continues its mission to commercialize sodium-ion battery technology, enabling a better battery at scale and supporting the transition to a more secure and sustainable energy future.
